Cheoy Lee CLB72: Why Two of the Same Year Aren't the Same Boat

Four cabins, crew quarters aft, 105,000 pounds on twin IPS. The CLB72 is a lot of boat inside 72 feet of hull. The spec sheet reads the same on every one of them.

The build sheets don’t. What the first owner ordered is where two hulls of the same year separate. It’s the part a listing never shows you.

The Specification

Factory standard, from the yard’s own document. Howard Apollonio drew it, interiors by Carmen, RINA hull construction certificate on the build. Cored and resin infused with carbon in the schedule and vinylester rather than polyester, which matters when you’re reading a survey against boats of the same age built the older way.

Where Two Hulls Diverge

The factory prepares the boat for a watermaker and for sewage treatment. Prepared for, not fitted. Mounting, plumbing and electrical are in. The equipment is whatever the first owner decided to buy.

That’s not a footnote here. Standard fresh water is 280 gallons against four guest cabins and two crew, so on a hull without a watermaker that number sets your range between marinas. Same year, same hours, same asking price, different boat on a week in the islands.

Get the original build sheet before you get attached to a hull. Not the listing. The build sheet.

Seventy Two Is the Hull

Hull length is 72 feet. Overall is 76 feet 11 inches. The difference is the swim platform, which is a big one and one of the better things about the boat.

It’s also almost five feet that every marina bills for. Budget dockage off the model name and you’re quoting yourself the wrong boat. It decides which slips and which lifts she fits, which is a conversation to have before an offer rather than after.

What This Means for You

Buying, the work is the comparison set. Two CLB72s are only comparable once you’ve matched them on equipment. The equipment that moves the asking price isn’t what a listing leads with. Get the set right and the offer writes itself.

Owning, it runs the other way. A boat carrying what buyers in this segment actually want shouldn’t be priced against one that doesn’t have it. The way to avoid that is to document what you have before she goes in front of anyone. Pricing a specific hull is a conversation, not a web page.

What Goes Wrong

Buy against a comp set built on length and year and you’ll either overpay or pass on the better hull. There’s no closing statement afterward to tell you which.

On survey, the drives are where the weighting matters. A surveyor will inspect them correctly. What he won’t do is tell you which findings are normal for the hours on this installation and which ones are the start of a real number, because that comes from having seen several. The Alexseal is the same story. It’s expensive to put right.

Before you write an offer, put your shortlist in front of somebody who has closed one. Not the boat. The list.

If you are exploring one

Start with the whole availability picture. Most brokers work one MLS. We work both.

What Most Brokers Get Wrong

Two things.

The first is pricing a CLB72 against whatever else carries the Cheoy Lee name at a similar length, which drags in boats that share the name and nothing structural.

The second is quitting early. On most brands the opening question is which generation you’re looking at. A broker with that habit runs the check here, finds nothing and stops. There’s nothing to find. The difference is in the build sheet and he never gets that far.

Ask how many CLB72s someone has closed and what the prepare for list covers. That’s a thirty second interview.

Who It Isn't For

If you want to cross oceans without planning around fuel and water, this isn’t the platform and a displacement boat will serve you better. If you’re running permanent crew of more than two, the arrangement is generous for the length but it has a limit. If you’re buying on price per foot, the build specification here is doing work a cheaper hull of the same length isn’t. A spreadsheet won’t give you credit for it.

Common Questions

No. The platform never split and the layout has stayed consistent. What separates one hull from another is condition, hours, care and how she was ordered.

Hull length is 72 feet. Overall is 76 feet 11 inches. The difference is the swim platform. Beam is 19 feet 10 inches. Marinas quote and bill on length overall.

Twin Volvo Penta IPS1050 on D13 blocks at 800 horsepower each, two Kohler 24 kW generators, 1,200 gallons of fuel and 280 of fresh water. Check the individual build sheet as well, since options varied hull to hull.

Not as standard. The factory prepares the boat for one, so the mounting, plumbing and electrical are there and the unit is not. Whether a given hull has one depends on the original order. With 280 gallons aboard it changes how the boat gets used.

Four cabins with eight berths and four heads, plus a crew cabin with two berths and its own head.

The drives and their service history, the build sheet against what the listing claims and the condition of the Alexseal. The weighting between those three is the conversation to have before the surveyor books.

That depends on the hull, its equipment and its history, so the honest answer isn’t a figure on a web page. What holds across the brand is the spread. Four of five brokerage resales closed meaningfully under the last published asking price, in the range of about ten to thirteen percent, so an asking price is a starting point rather than a value. The current Cheoy Lee market report has the fleet, what each boat is asking and how long it has been out there. Pricing your hull against it is a phone call and nothing about it goes public.

A listing tells you what one owner is asking today. It won’t tell you how his boat is equipped against the others, which hulls are priced to move or which owners would sell without ever advertising.
